Presenting a Play

Today the lions reading group presented a play to some of the other Pohutukawa children - The Ant and the Grasshoppers. They did very well with using loud voices and acting out the story.

Term Four

Welcome back to Term Four! We are ready for a busy term with athletics, Sockburn School 60th anniversary celebrations, the cultural festival and of course continuing with our literacy and mathematics programmes. Check out this tall tower that Mesake built at action station time today - he was very proud of himself!

Reading

We love taking turns at reading to the class!

Creating in Pohutukawa Landing

This morning at action station time in Pohutukawa landing a group of children were very busy constructing with the rods, plastic animals and vehicles. They used great team work skills and could tell an amazing story to go with their creation!

Art Exhibition

Remember to come along to our Art Exhibition tomorrow from 5.00 - 7.30pm in the hall. We have some fantastic art we have worked hard to make that we would love you to see! 

Art Day

Today we had a busy day full of art art and more art. We have been working hard to create amazing artworks for the school art exhibition next week. Make sure you come along to the art exhibition next Wednesday or Thursday to see what we have created!

Reading

We love reading in Pohutukawa! Every day we enjoy reading library books, poems, big books, our writing, and small books with our reading group.

Making Rainbows

Today we learnt about how rainbows are made. We then did two science experiments-magic milk with food colouring and dishwashing detergent, and making sugar water density rainbow layers. These led to awesome oral language and writing activities.

Afternoon Artwork

This term we are busy creating some amazing artworks. We have been enjoying making clay coil and pinch pots and then painting them.

Wigram Primary School Sod Turning

Wigram School Sod- turning Ceremony

What an exciting day! The whole school walked or bused down to our new school site to turn the first 'sod' which means that building will be starting soon for out new school. We sang 3 songs and listened some speeches. Well done on awesome behaviour and participation from all the Tamariki in Pohutukawa and also thanks to family members who can down to watch and support us.
We can't wait to see the  building begin!

NED Show

Today we had the NED show come to Sockburn School. Ian did some awesome yo-yo tricks for us and taught us to Never give up, Encourage others and Do our best. That way we can be champions in school and in life! 

Snakes writing

Today for Literacy the Snakes read a book about some of the (many!) things that Mums do. We drew pictures and wrote a sentence about what our own Mums do.

Lemonade!

This morning we had lots of fun making lemonade! We dissolved some sugar in hot water, squeezed the juice from the lemons and mixed it together to make a delicious drink. It tasted sweet and delicious!

Welcome back to Term Three

A big welcome back to Term Three! We hope that you all had a fantastic holiday break. A special welcome to all of the new children and families to Pohutukawa. We have been having a great first week back at school. We have had some changes to our Reading, Writing, Maths and Phonics groups  - ask your child who their teacher for each of these areas is and see if they can tell you! In the afternoons we have been learning about rubbish and recycling (what we can reduce, reuse and recycle), doing some dancing and children's yoga and today we visited the library. The children have loved our action station activities this week, where they have been busy learning through play.

Matariki

Before Mr M and Miss Smith left our learning space, they taught us all about Matariki. We learnt about how there are seven stars and how they brought back the sun. We also learnt about how sometimes people fly kites to celebrate Matariki. Look at the amazing kites we have made! We had so much fun flying them last week.

Statistics-Graphing

This weeks for maths we are learning about statistics-graphing. Today we made favourite fruit pictographs. Here is Riley's fantastic graph.

Cultural Celebration Day

What a fun day we had on Friday! We had an amazing cultural assembly where flags representing the different nationalities at Sockburn School were presented and we sung some of our favourite songs. This was followed by a shared lunch in house groups with some delicious food to try from different cultures. In the afternoon we had a discovery time with different cultural activities. One of our favourite activities was Polly's Mum helping us learn how to write our names in Japanese. This is how to write Finehika's name in Japanese!

Measurement

This week for maths we are learning about measurement - length. We have been measuring things using objects like rods and cubes and learning to cut and stick pictures to put them in order from shortest-tallest or tallest-shortest. Today we had lots of fun measuring how many rods tall different mountains are.
