Nepal fundraising Day

Wow! What an amazing day to celebrate our term's learning about kitchen science and Nepal. The whole school had a mufti day and the children from Pohutukawa and Kowhai had a market day too. We had bread, popcorn, jelly, fruit kebabs and iced biscuits all made by the inquiry groups. After lunch we had a coin trail on the senior court and raised a grand total of $255.

Thank you to everyone for their wonderful support, we can't wait to let Jen know how much we raised

iPads to support our learning!

Well it's been an exciting week for us in Pohutukawa! We have received 15 iPads to use to support our learning.

Today we had a go by doing some basic facts and our retell of what we had read. 

Kapa Haka

Today we have been having fun learning the Haka!

Number Games

In the red space for maths we have been playing number games to help us learn to recognise, count and sequence numbers.

Enviro group at Sockburn School

Today was the first meeting of the enviro group. Lawrence and Seth from Pohutukawa dug up strawberry plants in the garden with Miss Harney. Seth said he enjoyed digging and learned that we will have to wait for the plants to grow before we can eat the strawberries.

Week 9 Poem and Matariki

Week 8 Poem

This weeks poem! Can you comment what are the wow words are?

Will everything freeze?

.As part of our kitchen science experiments we wanted to see if everything we put in water and then in an ice cube tray in the freezer, would freeze....this is what we found out!

We put a lolly, some sultanas, a grape, coffee powder, salt, tomato sauce, rice, sugar and just water on its own into 3 ice cube trays. We left them in the freezer for a week and then checked to see if everything froze. 

We predicted that EVERYTHING would freeze but...

                                                       The salt did not!!

We could still feel the grainy salt that was in the water in the ice cube tray.

The water around the lolly froze, but the lolly was still sticky and not frozen!

                                             Everything else froze.

We need to investigate why the salt and the lolly did not freeze. We really enjoyed this experiment. What could you try this at home with? We'd love to hear about your experiments with freezing!!

Maths - Capacity in Pohutukawa

We are learning about capacity over the next few weeks and have been exploring measuring and comparing volume.

We were making containers for the three bears to have their ricies in...can you guess which is for father bear, mother bear and baby bear?

We were designing containers to hold 10 dinosaurs.
