Nepal - When Jen came to talk to us

On Thursday Jen came and talked to us about Nepal.
She shared photos of her trip to Nepal and talked about what it was like.

We found out that children have to make their own toys and some children don't go to school because they can not afford it.

We also found out that they don't have much food because they can't afford it.
Did you know:
- if you buy one bag of lollies in New Zealand you can buy 7 bags of rice in Nepal.
- if you buy one coffee in New Zealand you can buy one big bag of potatos in Nepal.

Is there a way we can help the children in Nepal?

Bruce Potter visits Sockburn

We were very lucky last week to have a visit from the illustrator and author Bruce Potter. He showed us how he illustrated his books and introduced us to Doodlebug the main character in one of his books. The children were inspired to doodle all sorts of pictures from their imaginations afterwards!

Dissolving

Which solids will dissolve in cold and hot water? We investigated and recorded our results.

Kaboom! Is it magic or is it science?

We have been experimenting to see how we can change liquids by adding other liquids to them.
Food colouring in milk....

This is what happened after we added washing up liquid!!
And again...!

Popcorn Explorers!

Today we looked at different ways to make popcorn. We discussed the word heat and brainstormed different things that let off heat. We worked out that candels and the sun produce heat.

First we used a candel and a test tube to see if we could make the kernel change into popcorn. Check it out.

We noticed that the small kernel has changed shape and turned into popcorn. Mr Gibsons test tube wasn't big enough for the whole change to happen.

Next we decided on three different places to put some kernels to see if they would pop because of the sun. One lot is in pohuhtukawa, one is in Moss Walters reading room and one is in Mrs Walkinshaws office. We have predicted which ones will pop first.

We are all looking forward to the results!

On Thursday we will make popcorn in a popcorn maker.

Autumn Discovery

We are making the most of this lovely sunny autumn weather by having lots of outside activities today. We have collected lots of the beautiful leaves that have fallen and used them to create monsters, birds and people.

The children created their own obstacle courses and then tried them out in teams.
